Letter from the President
Jeff Beard, MCA President
Hello. Thank you to everyone that participated during our How Clean is Clean- Aerospace Technical Forum in Huntsville, AL. The speakers shared lots of valuable information. I believe everyone in attendance learned something that will help them, if not today, in the future.
Thank you to our new members. We continue to grow, adding parts cleaning expertise to our community. As a member this expertise is available to you.
PFAS Update
As I had mentioned previously, I made an attempt to make some sense of what’s happening with PFAS and how it may affect parts cleaning. End users are hearing the term PFAS and are asking their suppliers “Is this a PFAS?” And depending on the product in question, the answer given may seem vague. I suspect this is because the EPA is not yet able to give specific guidance on specific molecules. In some cases, it could take years for a definitive ruling or EPA action. I found the research to be frustrating, and I’m sure you may feel the same way. As related to parts cleaning, the work to make any determination seems only to be just getting started. Below are some links that you may find helpful.

TCE Update
The hits keep coming against trichloroethylene (TCE). I found this article possibly linking TCE to Parkinson’s Disease.
https://scitechdaily.com/scientists-warn-common-cleaning-chemical-linked-to-500-increased-risk-of-parkinsons-disease/
EPA unreasonable risk to human health, lawyer commercials about contaminated water, possible link to Parkinson’s; if you are currently using TCE for parts degreasing I highly recommend you begin the process of finding an alternative cleaning process. This will give you time to consider all types of alternative processes and determine which meets and exceeds your specific needs and requirements. The MCA has resources available to help you understand your options.
