Letter from the President
Jeff Beard, MCA President
To all our members, thank you. Our organization will be successful because of you and your participation.
We are excited to announce our upcoming in-person event on Aug. 15, in Southfield, Michigan: How Clean is Clean – Automotive. We will have a great line-up of speakers sharing their expertise on a variety of subjects. We will be announcing the speakers and topics soon. Our in-person events offer an opportunity to meet with a variety of industry experts for discussion and fellowship.
Speaking of in-person events, save the date for our How Clean is Clean – Medical Device Technical Forum held in Winona Lake, Indiana, on Oct. 18.
The EPA continues to make progress on its TSCA work, most recently on PERC: READ MORE HERE. The industry awaits its decision on TCE and nPB. I suspect by the end of the year both solvents’ fate will be known.
Have a great and safe July 4th holiday.

Mission Statement:
The Cleaning Research Group at Sam Houston State University combines creativity with the latest science to improve the cleanliness, quality, efficiency, profitability, and environmental impact of manufacturing through speaking, workshops, online trainings, consultations, publications, and workforce development through our excellent graduates.
About Us
Named for Texas’ greatest hero, Sam Houston State University (SHSU) continually honors its historical roots through academic excellence. For more than 140 years, SHSU has been preparing students for meaningful lives of achievement. Its motto, “The measure of a Life is its Service,” resonates among its approximately 21,612 students, eight colleges and well beyond its Huntsville roots.
One excellent example is the service provided to the manufacturing community through SHSU’s one-of-a-kind Cleaning Research Group led by Dr. Darren Williams – Professor of Physical Chemistry. The CRG prepares and hosts webinars, online certifications, and the Product Quality Cleaning Workshops to train industry personnel in the art and science of critical cleaning.
Our Team
Sam Houston State has approximately 700 full-time faculty campus-wide and 12 tenured/tenure track chemistry faculty. The Department of Chemistry hosts the Cleaning Research Group that consists of Dr. Williams and his cohort of undergraduate chemistry majors and Master of Science research students.
Our Products/Services
In addition to degrees in over 170 fields of study, SHSU through the Cleaning Research Group offers several services that are relevant to the Manufacturing Cleaning Association membership. These include individual consultations in cleaning process improvement, online webinars, hands-on Product Quality Cleaning Workshops, and online/on-demand self-paced Topical Workshops. The most recent release is the On-Demand Aqueous Cleaning Workshop.
Awards and Recognition
The Cleaning Research Group’s partnership with Barbara and Ed Kanegsberg of BFK Solutions was awarded the Partners in Prosperity Award at the 2020 American Chemical Society’s Southwest Regional Meeting for “partnerships among industry, academia, government, small businesses and/or other organizations that result in impactful outcomes”.
University accolades include, according to U.S. News and World Report, the best in Texas in “Top Performers on Social Mobility” and No. 6 in the “2022 Best Colleges in Texas.” Sam Houston State offers top-ranked degree programs and is No. 3 among the “Best Valued Online Colleges” by TexasOnlineColleges.com. Nationally, SHSU is among the top 100 colleges and universities for Hispanic students, according to Hispanic Outlook on education magazine.
